Frequently Asked Questions

What does an initial acupuncture appointment entail?

An initial acupuncture appointment is around 75 minutes long. During the intake we will go through a brief medical history. Several different questions will be asked that may not seem related to your chief complaint. The beauty of Chinese Medicine is that it takes EVERYTHING into account. Don’t be surprised if you come in for shoulder pain and we start discussing your digestive system! Feel free to ask your own questions during the intake as we want patients to understand and be a part of their healing. After the intake, we will begin the acupuncture portion. The needles are usually left in for 30 minutes depending on the condition and if indicated other modalities such as cupping or guasha may be implemented. If herbs are prescribed, those will be filled while you are relaxing on the table and you will be provided instructions on how to take them.

What does an initial Functional Medicine appointment entail?

An initial functional medicine appointment is 45-60 minutes long. If you have recent blood work, Dr. Cleo will have you send that over before the appointment and we will review it during your appointment. She looks at lab numbers from a different lens so she may find things that previous providers have not. You then will go through a thorough medical history including past and present conditions, symptoms, treatments, and challenges. We will curate a treatment plan specifically for you that will include lab work, supplements, herbs, diet, and lifestyle.

Will my treatment be in a private room?

Cleo Amelia has 4 private treatment rooms and treatments will always be kept private along with patient information. We follow HIPAA guidelines to protect patient confidentiality. Community acupuncture is something Cleo Amelia is looking to add in the future once it is safe to do so. These will be in a less private setting and more information will be provided once this service is offered.

How should I prepare for my acupuncture appointment?

Please eat something light 1-2 hours before the treatment. It is best if you wear something or bring something to change into where we have access to your arms, legs, and abdomen. We also have paper gowns if you prefer to change into one of those. Please be mindful of hygiene and any smells from strong perfumes or colognes.

How are the herbal consultations different?

Herbal perscriptions are included in the acupuncture appointments. However, if you do not want acupuncture or do not have time we can certainly just prescribed herbs for you! The intake will be the same as the acupuncture appointments. A regular acupuncture appointment lasts about 60 minutes. Herbal consultations are around 30 minutes.

How much do herbs usually cost?

It depends on the the herbal formula and dosage prescribed but usually around $25-$35 per week.

What do I need to do to prepare for my cosmetic acupuncture treatment?

Please come with a washed and clean face free of makeup and products.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Everyone experiences acupuncture a little bit differently. Acupuncture should never be painful but there will be sensation. These sensations include but are not limited to a dull ache, vibrating, or buzzing. We are in constant communication with our patients during treatment. We request the patients please let us know if anything feels uncomfortable. Acupuncture needles are thinner than a strand of hair so it is not like a shot or injection. There are also different sizes of needles for each of our patients unique needs.

What payment methods do you accept?

All major credit cards and cash. We do not accept checks. If you would like to submit a bill to your insurance, superbills will be provided.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments needed varies on person and condition being treated. This will all be discussed in your treatment plan. In general, 10 treatments is a good starting place. At first, treatments should be twice per week and when things are improving spaced out to once per week. Eventually treatments could go down to once every two weeks or as needed for maintenance.

For cosmetic acupuncture - the initial treatment time frame is once per week for 12 weeks and then treatments can be spaced out.

What can I expect after the treatment?

Again, this is different for everyone. Most people leave an acupuncture treatment feeling relaxed. You can certainly resume your day as normal and go back to work or school right afterwards. We do suggest refraining from intense exercise, alcohol, marijuana, etc for at least 12-24 hours for the full benefits of the treatment.

Is there paperwork to fill out before my appointment?

Yes! We will provide you with electronic initial intake forms and other paperwork that we will need to have on file before treatment. If you do not have a way to fill the paperwork electronically we ask that you arrive early to you appointment so you can fill it out in the office.

What are the most common side effects of acupuncture?

Typically there are very little to no side effects of acupuncture. However, the most common side effects are mild bruising or slight redness at the site of the needle. If orthopedic needling is done there may be some soreness in the area that was worked on.

Does facial rejuvenation cause bruising or is there any down time?

The face is a very sensitive and delicate area so there is a higher risk of small bruises but we take great care in minimizing any bruising with proper technique! If bruising does occur they usually go away in 3-7 days. There may be slight redness to the complexion due to the extra blood flow going to the face. This should subside within a few hours or by the next day. This is nothing extreme and no down time is required after the treatment!

What type of training and licensing is required to practice acupuncture?

In the state of California, acupuncturists must complete a program through a school accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. The curriculum must include 3,000 hours in which 950 of those are supervised clinical instruction. Cleo went to Pacific College of Health and Sciences in Chicago, IL. The school also has campuses in San Diego and New York. She completed their Doctoral program which took a little over 4 years. She also completed additional trainings outside of school including an extensive herbal training and facial rejuvenation. After graduation, you must pass the California Acupuncture Board exam and apply for state licensure which includes an official background check. Acupuncturists are also required to complete a minimum of 50 continuing education hours every two years to maintain an active license.

How do I take the herbs?

This will be discussed in your appointment. The dosage and timing is different for everyone but typically they are taken twice a day (12 hours apart) and two hours before or after other supplements or medications. The herbs are granules that are measured with a provided spoon and added into hot water. You mix the herbs in and drink it like a nice cup of hot tea!

Do you prescribe medications or supplements?

I do not prescribe pharmaceutical medications. I can prescribe or suggest supplements but I tend to stick to Chinese Herbal Medicine which I have extensive training in and this is where my true passion lies.

How do the herbs work and why should I consider them?

Chinese herbal medicine works off the same theories as acupuncture and can enhance your treatment and also speed up your recovery time! While we work with acupuncture in the office, herbal therapy is your chance to continue your treatment goals while at home. Each herb has different properties (taste and temperature) and mechanisms of action to address all types of pathology. Herbs are rarely taken alone but are combined with other herbs to create a formula. Together, herbs work synergistically to rebalance and restore the body. Just like acupuncture, the goal is to fix what is not functioning properly in the body rather than simply masking symptoms.

What is Chinese Medicine?

More than 3,000 years old, Chinese Medicine has stood the test of time. While incredibly intricate and detailed, the system can always be brought back to the basic theories of yin and yang and the laws of nature. Aiming to restore the bodies innate ability to heal, Chinese Medicine addresses the underlying cause leading to an imbalance in physiological function. The medicine consists of several different modalities including acupuncture, herbal medicine, moxibustion, gua sha, cupping, tuina, and diet therapy.

Cleo Amelia combines ancient practices with modern technology to provide well-rounded treatment plans to optimize your health.
